PLANNING AND LEGISLATION

Manages and provides information and external relations to monitor the development of European standards for internationalization

This section focuses on Italian, European and international legislative developments in food hygiene and safety, marketing standards and produce quality, and all Italian and European requirements on pesticides (authorizations and revocations) and decisions on maximum permitted residue levels (MRLs). With reference in particular to MRLs, in 2002 CSO started to collaborate with Germany, the main destination market for Italian produce, on an import tolerance procedure intended to remove obstacles to the free circulation of goods, due to the absence of European harmonization on MRLs. At the European level, CSO works actively to promote the definition and application of European regulations on MRL harmonization. Internationally it is strongly committed to the removal of the plant health barriers (SPS) that prevent the export of Italian produce to some non-EU countries. The activities of the Planning and Legislation section include:

  • Monitoring of Italian, European and international legislation on fruit and vegetables.
  • Requirements on food safety and traceability.
  • International and European standards on the marketing of fruit and vegetable products.
  • New measures on production techniques with low environmental impact, integrated pest management systems and organic cultivations.
  • Opening of new markets: support activities for the elimination of SPS plant health barriers.
  • CMO for fruit and vegetables.
